The customer, a tech product development company, made the strategic decision to transition from Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) to AWS Cloud. The goal was to create a secure, scalable and cost-effective cloud environment without disrupting business continuity.

There was a need for a more cost-effective, scalable, and operationally efficient cloud environment to support the company’s growing suite of mission-critical SaaS products. The customer wanted to minimize service disruptions, ensure billing transparency and implement robust security guardrails.

The business’ cloud infrastructure needed to support streamlined multi-account management and a centralized network setup.

The migration of mission-critical applications across UAT, staging and production environments had to be done while ensuring zero downtime.

The team faced some difficulties with AWS Migration Evaluator that would require resolution before proceeding.

The company partnered with Cloud Kinetics to kickstart the migration to AWS Cloud.

Using AWS services & features for a seamless transition from OCI to AWS Cloud

The migration from Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) to AWS Cloud took place under the AWS Migration Acceleration Program (MAP). The complete migration included 157 virtual machines (VMs), 122 Amazon EKS clusters and core networking components, with a focus on cost efficiency and operational optimization.

Multi-account management

  • With AWS Control Tower for multi-account management and AWS landing zone, a set-up was created to conduct the complete migration process. This AWS best practice ensured all the cloud accounts are secure, adhering to the defined regulatory frameworks, and spending monitored from day Zero.
  • The team faced some issues while configuring AWS Migration Evaluator which were addressed by Cloud Kinetics.

Secure & cost-optimized migration

Site-to-site VPN connectivity created a secure and efficient pathway for data migration from OCI to AWS. With AWS Application Migration Service, VMs are moved without costly reconfigurations or downtime. This approach avoids expensive delays and maintains business continuity.

Centralized networking architecture

A highly efficient and secure network was built within AWS.

  • AWS Network Firewall actively inspects all incoming and outgoing traffic, strengthening defences without needing extra, expensive hardware.
  • Private networking keeps internal traffic flowing efficiently, preventing unnecessary data transfer costs.
  • Additionally, AWS Transit Gateway acts as a central hub for all connections, reducing redundant links and keeping networking expenses low.

Kubernetes & resource management

For applications running on Kubernetes (EKS), resource management was simplified. AWS Resource Access Manager (RAM) allowed for easy sharing of network access, enabling EKS workloads to run more smoothly and reducing operational clutter.

Secure, cost-efficient monitoring

Security is now proactively managed without significant expense.

  • Services like AWS GuardDuty, CloudTrail, Inspector and Detective continuously monitor for threats, helping to prevent costly security breaches.
  • When incidents occur, AWS Security Hub will send alerts directly to teams via Slack through AWS Chatbot, allowing for quick response and lower security overhead.
  • Elastic Disaster Recovery Service provides a cost-effective way to recover from major disruptions, avoiding financial losses due to downtime.
  • AWS Identity Center (SSO) and AWS Directory Services streamline user access, reducing administrative effort.

Cost optimization strategies

  • AWS Cost Explorer & Budgets enabled real-time tracking and control of expenditures.
  • AWS Savings Plans & Reserved Instances leveraged to reduce compute costs.
