According to Gartner Market Insights, around 75% of organizations will adopt a hybrid cloud model by 2020. Another clear indicator of this growth is how dominant cloud providers have ramped up their hybrid and multi-cloud offerings in the past year. Even as companies move away from on-premise infrastructure, often the need to retain some applications on-premise are giving rise to the popularity of Hybrid cloud.

Cloud redefined by Edge computing

Edge computing is transforming the way data is being handled, processed, and delivered from devices across the world. Advancements in artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML) and upcoming 5G connectivity are radically changing how data is created, processed, stored and utilized. In order to server customers effectively in the digital age, Companies are seeking almost instant access to data and compute resources and for that they are turning to edge computing. Edge computing will be integrated into core cloud services and demand for edge computing will grow. Containers go mainstream

Containers allow developers to create and deploy applications faster and more securely than traditional methods. Companies are using containers to enable portability between cloud services from AWS, Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud as they build out their DevOps strategies for swifter software production. Kubernetes has established itself as the container orchestration platform of choice to deploy containers based on operating-system-level virtualization rather than hardware virtualization.

Serverless – the new normal

Faster time-to-market is one of the key factors for surviving and thriving in today’s competitive economy. Serverless enables developers to focus on their core product without having to worry about managing and operating servers. Cloud apps are shifting into the serverless world and it will indeed bring about notable changes in how applications are deployed and developed. According to Gartner, more than 20 percent of global enterprises will have adopted serverless computing technologies in 2020, a sharp increase from the 5 percent in 2018. For teams who can’t afford the time spent in dealing with the complexities of managing elaborate infrastructure and want to channel their resources towards more productive goals, serverless infrastructure will be the new normal.

Microservices Architecture

Microservices architecture has emerged as a way of providing development teams with more flexibility and agility. Microservices essentially breaks monolithic applications into smaller, single-function services with well-defined interfaces and operations. One of the main advantages of microservices is that these services can be scaled and deployed independently allowing for fault isolation and low fault tolerance. These services can be written in different programming languages and may use different data storage techniques. Overall, microservices architecture can offer some unique advantages over traditional architectures and development teams are looking to use this type of architecture more and more.

The global public cloud computing market is set to exceed $330 billion in 2020 and the industry is expected to grow at a CAGR of 18%. As cloud adoption and investment grows, it will continue to dominate, evolve and fuel innovation in the coming decade as well.
